Daniel Chipman

Daniel Chipman (October 22, 1765 - April 23, 1850) was a United States Representative from Vermont. He was born in Salisbury, Connecticut. He graduated from Dartmouth College, in Hanover, New Hampshire in 1788. He studied law and was admitted to the bar and practiced in Rutland, Vermont 1790-1794. In addition, he was a member of the state constitutional conventions in 1793, 1814, 1836, 1843, and 1850. He moved to Middlebury, Vermont in 1794.
Chipman was a member of the Vermont House of Representatives 1798-1808, 1812-1814, 1818, and 1821, and served as speaker during the sessions of 1813 and 1814. He was a professor of law at Middlebury College 1806-1818 and a member of the Governor’s council in 1808. He was elected as a Federalist to the Fourteenth Congress and served from March 4, 1815, to May 5, 1816, when he resigned. He was appointed reporter of the superior court in 1824; moved to Ripton, Vermont in 1828 and continued the practice of law. Chipman engaged in literary pursuits and died in Ripton, Vermont in 1850. He was buried in West Cemetery.
