Talk:Damage over time - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Talk:Damage over time

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I think this should be split into two articles.

  • "Damage Over Time" as a generic concept and strategy used in video games.
  • "Damage Over Time" with the specifics of how it applies to Guild Wars.

I came across this article while editing a World of Warcraft article and wanted to link to a generic explanation of DOT. Alternatively, this article could be restructured to have a "generic" section followed by game-specific sections. I think separate articles is the better option...

[edit] I agree

I was the one who originally edited the article. It was very Guild-Wars specific, so I made it much more broad in scope and descriptive to someone who had never played an MMORPG. Merging the two (or creating subsections for specific games) is an excellent idea. I'm an experience Guild Wars and WoW player, and I wanted something that neither side would feel left out on.

[edit] Name

According to Naming conventions, shouldn't it be "Damage over time"? --Smack (talk) 04:28, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Add

I added the following:

It should be noted that a "DoT" is debuff, meaning that the effect will continue even if the unit causing the DoT stops attacking or even dies. If a unit is dealing damage over time but must continue with a certain action to allow the damage to continue, it is refered to as a "Channeling" action, such as a "channeling spell."

I fell that this information is important for someone who does not understand the overall concept of "damage over time." it would be very easy to confuse a channeling spell with a dot based on the original information. --Mines_bigger(talk) 09:34, 15 October (PST)

[edit] DPS and DoT

Why the hell does DPS redirect to DoT. They are related, but Damage Per Second (DPS) and Damage over Time (DoT) is two different things! What I mean is, DPS is your average damage output per second. DoT is a completely different thing, because it's more used to describe spells that does damage ie. once every 3 seconds or so, and it's not nessecarily the average damage output per second. However, the damage output of DoTs are used in counting the average damage per second, along with the damage from other spells? Get it? It is NOT the same thing! Believe me, I know! --194.17.7.150 12:47, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
