"4th of July" is the 13th song from Soundgarden's 1994 album Superunknown. The song is arguably the heaviest on the album and contains a melody and guitar tone very reminiscent of early Black Sabbath due to Kim Thayil's downtuned guitar.^{[citation needed]} Although not a mainstream hit, it remains a favorite among fans. On the meaning of the song singer Chris Cornell had this to say, when asked if he writes a lot of songs on acid he responded, "No, but '4th of July' is pretty much about that day. You wouldn't get that if you read it. It doesn't read like, 'Woke up, dropped some acid, got into the car and went to the Indian reservation'." ^{[citation needed]}
