IMDb profile

48 Hrs. is a 1982 action comedy film directed by Walter Hill, starring Eddie Murphy (in his film debut), Nick Nolte, James Remar, David Patrick Kelly, Brion James, and Annette O'Toole. The screenplay was written by Hill, Roger Spottiswoode, Larry Gross, Steven E. de Souza and Jeb Stuart (uncredited). Murphy and Nolte play a convict and a cop who team up to catch a cop-killer. The title refers to the amount of time they have to solve the crime. This was Eddie Murphy's film debut.

48 Hrs. is often credited as being the first "buddy cop" film. The genre evolved throughout the 1980s and 1990s with features such as Lethal Weapon, Tango & Cash, and Rush Hour to name a few.

The film spawned a 1990 sequel, Another 48 Hours.

[edit] Summary

Convicted robber Albert Ganz (James Remar) escapes from prison with the help of his partner Billy Bear (Sonny Landham). They check into the Walden Hotel in San Francisco under false names and call prostitutes. Jack Cates (Nick Nolte) is an alcoholic San Francisco cop. He and two of his fellow officers VanZant (Jonathan Banks) and Algren (James Keane) go to the Walden Hotel to investigate G. P. Polson (a pseudonym used by Ganz). Ganz and Billy kill Algren and VanZant in a bloody shootout using the prostitutes as hostages, then escape. Jack wants revenge, so he convinces his boss, Haden, to let him work alone on this case. Jack goes to a prison and visits Ganz and Billy's former partner Reggie Hammond (Eddie Murphy). Jack decides to parole Reggie Hammond for 48 hours so Reggie can help him find Ganz and Billy. Jack and Reggie do not get along and during their first night together they fist fight each other in a garbage filled alley. Jack learns that Reggie has $500,000 stashed in the trunk of his car parked in a garage for three years since the date of his conviction. Ganz and Billy are after the money, so they kidnap their former partner Luther's (David Patrick Kelly) girlfriend Rosalie, to force him to get Reggie's car. With this in mind, Jack and Reggie try to find Ganz and Billy before Reggie must return to prison. Reggie and Jack end up killing Ganz and Billy in San Francisco's Chinatown. After 48 hours they become good friends and Reggie is returned to prison.
