Trofisk niveau

Ordet kommer af græsk trofein = "ernære" + fransk niveau = "flade", "trin". Det betyder altså egentlig "fødetrin", og det trofiske niveau betegner derfor et trin i fødekæden.
Der er følgende niveauer:
- Producenter (autotrofe planter, alger og bakterier)
- Planteædere (heterotrofe planteædere, -snyltere og -sygdomme)
- Rovdyr af første orden (ædere af planteædere)
- Rovdyr af anden orden (ædere af rovdyr)
Da både stof- og energitabet ved omsætning fra et niveau til det næste er på 90%, er det begrænset, hvor mange niveauer, man kan komme op på. Allerede ved rovdyr af anden orden er reviret, der skal afsøges, så stort, at der næsten ikke er energimæssig fornuft i at løbe efter føden.
Rovdyr af tredje eller endnu højere ordner ses kun, når det lykkes dyr fra en biotop at udnytte fødekilder i en anden (eksempelvis ved fiskeri).
