[edit] adminship

I am requesting adminship on Meta for the account m:User:Etse. Etse 23:27, 29 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Don't you rather need adminship on this wikipedia here? Then you have to put your request on meta:Requests_for_permissions.
But the question I came here for: When exactly have you started this wikipedia? 22 Jun 2004? I'd like to write an announcement on the news page of the German wikipedia. good luck and may the Cherokee wikipedia grow fast :-) --meta:User:Elian

Etse, I know nothing of anything but saw your request for a logo change. (20040302) image:Wiki.png

Hello. Please can you protect Image:Wiki.png so the logo can be switched as requested at m:Requests for logos. Thank you. Angela 00:56, 23 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Don't worry, I've done this now. Angela 19:07, 2 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Cool. Thanks, Angela. --Etse 20:49, 2 Aug 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Hi

Hi Etse, I'm a bit curious as to why you protected the Main Page since there hasn't been any vandalism to it, at least that I can see.

Also, I'm a bit surprised that you say we have many articles partly or completely in Cherokee - we only have one with more than a couple of words in Cherokee, and we have *none* that are completely in Cherokee.

I was also wondering about your approach to translation.

Generally, what I would expect (and has been done at most Wikipedias) is a progressive approach. Start with small stubs completely in Cherokee, such as "Japan is a country in Asia", and expand on them. Rather than translating the entire English article word-by-word, the best idea, at least for a relatively new Wikipedia, is to use stubs. Add information from the English wikipedia a sentence at a time, and be sure the sentences are translated completely before you add them.

A stub for Guantanamo Bay could feature the text (in Cherokee, of course) "Guantanamo Bay is a United States army base in Cuba" or something similar, the article for Pakistan could feature the text "Pakistan is a country in Asia. The predominant religion is Islam. The official language is Urdu" or something similar (or shorter).

The key to this is that the first sentence you put for a stub should give a reader a vague idea of what something is. Saying that a country is in Asia, for example, will help at least to distinguish it from, say, African countries. After that, add a characteristic that distinguishes it from countries the previous sentence did not distinguish it from. Continue to do this until the description could only refer to that country, and you will have a reasonable (but still stub-ish) article.

If you don't know how to say something along the lines of "___ is a country in Asia", that's the kind of thing that would be simple enough you could ask a native speaker without causing them much trouble.

[edit] My reply

Hi there. I'm not sure exactly who it was who left this message, so if I've mis-identified anybody, sorry! Good comments and ideas--I'll keep them in mind. You'll have to forgive me. I'm new to this. ;-) --Etse 03:37, 28 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Hi Etse. It wasn't me who left the above message. I expect it may have been en:User:Node ue. Angela 03:39, 28 Aug 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Oh, yeah

Oh, yeah, humorously enough, I've learned how to say "Japan is a country in Eastern Asia" since my last visit. lol. ᏂᎰᏂ ᏙᏱᏗᏢ ᎦᏚᎲ ᎧᎸᎬᎢᏗᏢ ᎠᏏᏲᎢ. ᎭᎭ. Native speakers are helpful, and my Cherokee is getting better and better.

[edit] Hi

Hi Etse!

I just wanted to let you know I set up the Navajo Wikipedia at nv.wikipedia.org

It sort of sucks (like my Navajo), but there's enough that if someone comes along later they'll be able to improve it; also the "dinétah" article is fairly extensive... hmm.

Just thought you'd want to know...

Oh, also, not to rush you or anything, but do you have any of those original syllabary characters ready yet?

Best, Node ue 05:45, 3 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Translation of the week

Currently we have started a project on meta.wikipedia to get an article translated in as many wikipedias as possible every week. The article will be about a subject that usually gets rarely translated and has a lot of links to other subjects. Currently we have no-one to translate in your language. If someone is interested to participate please see: meta:Translation of the week You can also submit articles from your own languages there that you think deserve translation, but have a small chance of it. The articles must not be to short and not to long and have lots of links to possible other articles! en:user:Waerth

[edit] Coordination

Hi, Etse. I'm the QUechua-wiki administrator. We've put separatly in the top of the list of wikis of the Main Page the links to the Native American Languages Wikipedias, as in Inuktitut and nerly in Nawatl. We've been wondering if could you do same way in Cherokee Wiki? We're triying to make colaboration group among us. Thanks. --Huhsunqu 03:33, 16 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] ᏫᎩᏇᏗᏯ

  • Halló Etse! I want to let you know about GlobalWPSearch Wikipedia made by de:Benutzer:Aka. I was searching for examples like GlobalWPSearch Esperanto but find the first more apropriate.
  • GlobalWPSearch is a tool to find pages with the same name. Depending on what you find you can add interlanguage links.
  • ᏫᎩᏇᏗᏯ does not have interlanguage links. Could you please expand the stub a litle bit and link it to some of the other languages? I made a redirect from Wikipedia to ᏫᎩᏇᏗᏯ. Hope that this is OK. Best regards Gangleri | Th | T 17:20, 3 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] India page

Hi Etse, I am currently trying to add as many interwiki links to the w:India page. Would you be kind enough to make a new page based on the cherokee script for India (a sentence there would be enough), and link it up to w:India? Thanks for your efforts, w:User:Nichalp

[edit] Science pearls

Hi,

I address you as the ambassador of your wikipedia. Please notice the above project.

This project, more than other projects, will benefit from inter-wiki cooperation. Can you post a message regarding this project at your wikipedia village pump.

Thanks for your help, APH from the English wiki

[edit] Wikizine

Hi, I am w:nl:gebruiker:Walter of the dutch Wikipedia. I am writing you because your are listed as ambassador of your wiki. I have something to say that I think you will find useful and possibly others of your wiki also.

You know it is not easy for the members of a local wiki to be informed about what is going on in the higher levels of the Wikimedia family. This because of the language problem and the high level of fragmentation of places where you can find information.

I am now making a weekly news letter (Wikizine) that attempts to provide the news of the Wikimedia projects. The concept is to list only a very short description of the news an give the relevant url to the subject. I want it to be short, only give the news that is important for all projects. The target audience include the ambassadors. It is for people who are interested in what it going on outside there own wiki. I emphasize on the news that is practical-technical. The information comes form several "news"-pages on several wikis, the mailinglists and IRC. There will be news I can not discover. If you have news found somewhere or from you own wiki please let my know. wikizine AT wikipedia.be

I can only create one version in something that supposed to be English. I count on the readers to inform there local wiki about the news in there own language.

Wikizine is send by use of the mailinglist Announce-l. It is only used for this. So people can subscribe without being swamped by emails like the lists.

http://mail.wikipedia.org/mailman/listinfo/announce-l

I hope that you and others of your wiki will subscribe to Wikizine and give feedback. So that Wikizine can become really a source where Wikimedians can find out what is going on. Greetings, w:nl:gebruiker:Walter PS: do not repond here. I will not see it.

[edit] John Conner 1967

I am John Conner. I would like to improve Wikipedia. But lately, Wikipedia was frequently attacked by destruction-bots. I would like to participate actively and will not bear that. Because for the moment unfortunately too few possibilities for it are ordered to me, I would like to apply as the second administrator. --John Conner 1967 13:13, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Translation Request (2 sentences)

For the front page of the Novial Test Wikipedia it would be nice to have a Cherokee translation of the following 2 sentences:

<>

Welcome to the Wikipedia in the Novial language!

You can read about the international auxiliary language Novial here.

<>

See the original request at Wikimedia Incubator here.

Which flag or other symbol should I use next to the Cherokee translation? (I'm using flags for most languages.)

Thank you, Nov_ialiste

Since Novial is not a spoken language, but a artificial one, have no interest in providing translations for it.
