[edit] Footnotes

  1. ^ If Italy wins Euro 2008, the spot will be given to the World Cup runner-up, France.
  2. ^ CONCACAF members Mexico Mexico and the United States United States have accepted invitations, but they would presumably not be allowed to represent CONMEBOL in the Confederations Cup should either win the Copa América. CONMEBOL has had such rules for previous editions, and similar ones at the club level for the Copa Libertadores.
  3. ^ a b In December 2004, FIFA decided that, starting with this edition, "the South American and European champions will no longer be obliged to take part". [1]
  4. ^ The OFC qualifying tournament for the 2010 FIFA World Cup will double as the Nations Cup: the top team in the six-team final round (to be played home-and-away, October 2007-April 2009) will be declared the Nations Cup champion, participate in the Confederations Cup and probably play for a World Cup spot against a team from a different confederation (in late 2009). The six-team preliminary round will be played in September 2007. It is not clear whether the competition will be technically the 2009 or the 2007-2009 OFC Nations Cup.[2]
