White Side is a mountain in the English Lake District. It is 863 m (2,832 feet) high and is situated to the east of Thirlmere and to the west of Glenridding valley. This places White Side in the Helvellyn range with Raise to the north and Helvellyn Lower Man to the south, both of which are of greater height.
Strictly the name White Side refers to the western slope of a nameless summit. However the summit is often also given the name White Side for convenience as was done by Alfred Wainwright. Wainwright also suggested that the name could have come from the quartz found on the western slope.
White Side is given a chapter in Alfred Wainwright's first pictorial guide of the Lake district which qualifies it as a wainwright, of which it is the 16th highest. White Side is also listed as a Hewitt being the 17th highest and a Nuttall of which it is the 22nd highest in Enlgand.
The western and eastern faces of White Side are quite different in appearance. The eastern face is predominanlty crag and scree falling abruptly to Keppel Cove and Brown Cove and the dried Keppelcove tarn. In contrast the western face is less steep falling gently to Thirlmere. The upper parts being mainly grass and of gentle gradients. The lower parts do provide some crags, such Brown crag, however they are less steep.
