Steve Tilson

Steve Tilson, born 27 July 1966 in Wickford, England, is manager of the English football league team Southend United, who will play in the Championship in 2006-07.
Tilson began his footballing career with non-league side Witham Town before being signed by then Southend manager David Webb. During the 1990s, Tilson appeared in just under 250 matches and played in the side that won two consecutive promotions in the early part of the decade. Tilson played continually for Southend, except for a loan spell at Brentford, until 1997, when he signed for Canvey Island, serving as club captain during his 4-year spell with the team.
In 2002, Tilson moved back to Southend, this time to head a newly created "Centre of Excellence". Tilson worked to develop Southend's youth until the sacking of Steve Wignall in November 2003. With the club in danger of relegation to the Football Conference, Tilson was named caretaker-manager by chairman Ron Martin and proceeded to take Southend clear of danger. Also in the same season, Tilson lead Southend to the first ever national cup final in the club's history, losing to Blackpool 2-0 in the LDV Vans Trophy Final. In March of 2004 Tilson was offered the job of manager on a full time basis, and accepted the offer.
The 2004-2005 season started with Southend United again favoured to be relegated. However, Tilson led the side to 4th position in League Two and then promotion after a 2-0 victory over Lincoln City in the playoff final. The 2004-2005 season also saw Southend return to the LDV Trophy final against Wrexham, although Tilson's side lost the match 2-0 after extra time.
The 2005-2006 season saw even more success and silverware as Tilson guided Southend to win promotion in consecutive seasons to the Championship as champions of League One, ending their nine-year absence from the league's second tier.
In addition to his duties at Southend, Steve Tilson is also assisting Peter Taylor with the England national under-21's team.
In October 2006 his name was linked with the manager's job at West Bromwich Albion but the job was eventually given to Tony Mowbray. On October 9th 2006, the Southend board announced that they have officially refused Norwich City FC permission to speak to Tilson about their managerial vacancy.
