Rei Hino (火野レイ Hino Rei?) is a fictional character, a Sailor Senshi, one of the central characters in the Sailor Moon metaseries. She is known in the English translations as Raye Hino.
Rei is identifiable by her long dark hair and the gray-red school uniform she wears. She is a practitioner of Shinto, in particular a miko at the Hikawa Shrine, where she lives.
Her first appearance is in Episode 10 of the anime (7 in the English dub), Act 3 of the manga, and Act 3 of the live action series.

[edit] Sailor Mars
Rei is able to transform into Sailor Mars. Her powers are mainly fire-based, and all are offensive attacks. As a priestess, she possesses a certain amount of psychic ability, and is able to do fire-readings, sense danger, and banish evil spirits. She is the secondary leader of the "inner" senshi, after Sailor Venus. Her primary uniform color is red, with some lavender, and she wears high heels when transformed. In the manga and live-action drama, there is a small jewel at the waist of her uniform.
[edit] Profile
Rei is the traditional Japanese beauty — delicate features, pale skin, and long, shining dark hair. Unlike the other girls, she attends a Catholic school (despite personally being Shinto) called T*A Private Girls School. She is widely admired for her elegance and charm, earning the adulation of classmate and stranger, male and female alike.
Rei is somewhat distant, however. Her strange psychic talents have caused some to be afraid of her, and her family situation makes her unreceptive to close friendship. Her mother died years ago; her father is a politician who doesn't care to be involved in her life. She therefore lives at the Hikawa shrine, under the care of her grandfather, a priest. In the anime, "grandpa" appears frequently as a short, rotund lech; in the manga he scarcely appears at all and when he does, he's the physical opposite of his anime counterpart; tall, skinny, a full head of hair and even a mustache. In the live-action drama, he is never mentioned.
Because of the lack of respectable males in her life, Rei harbors a generally low estimation of all men, considering them emotionally weak and untrustworthy. As the story progresses she softens somewhat, and is even attracted to various men. However, she is never given a serious romantic interest, and outside the anime never displays any particular desire for one. She is not portrayed as any more attracted to women than she is to men.
Among her friends, which consist entirely of the other senshi, Rei sometimes adopts an aloof, big-sisterly attitude. This façade is frequently broken by her great enthusiasm, her genuine affection for all of them, and her sharp tongue. Of all the girls, Rei is probably the most sarcastic.
In the manga, Rei cares for two of the crows living at the shrine, naming them Phobos and Deimos (after the two moons of Mars). Late in the manga series, they briefly reveal that they are in fact Power Guardians Phobos and Deimos, subordinate to her.
Rei was given a special episode in the manga, entitled Casablanca Memories partly because it is revealed in the story that her favorite flower is the white "Casablanca" lily. It tells of the friendship Rei had with her father's secretary, Kaidou. Rei at one point even fancied herself in love with him, and was shocked when he suddenly became engaged to another woman. Rei also shared a second manga story with Aino Minako, entitled Rei and Minako's Girls School Battle.
In an early DiC promotional tape that advertised Sailor Moon to television stations, Rei was called Dana.[1]
[edit] Other forms
Senshi forms - As she grows stronger, Sailor Mars gains additional powers, and at key points her uniform changes to reflect this. The first change takes place in Act 36 of the manga, when she obtains the Mars Crystal and her outfit becomes similar to that of Super Sailor Moon. She is not given a new title. A similar event takes place in Episode 152 of the anime, and she is given the name Super Sailor Mars. A third form appears only in the manga, also unnamed but analogous to Eternal Sailor Moon.
Princess Mars - During the Silver Millennium, Sailor Mars was also the Princess of her home planet. She was among those given the duty of protecting Princess Serenity of the Moon Kingdom. As Princess Mars, she dwelt in Phobos-Deimos Castle and wore a red gown--she appears in this form in the original manga, as well as in supplementary art.[2][3] Naoko Takeuchi once drew her in the arms of Jadeite, but no further romantic link between them was established.[4]

[edit] Transformations
(Note: In the English dub, she transforms without saying "Make-up" at the end.)
- Mars Power, Make-up! — Used to transform into Sailor Mars.
- Mars Star Power, Make-up! — Used to transform into Sailor Mars.
- Mars Planet Power, Make-up! — Used to transform into Sailor Mars. (Manga only.)
- Mars Crystal Power, Make-up! — Used to transform into Sailor Mars's two more powerful forms in the manga, and into Super Sailor Mars in the anime.
All of Sailor Mars's transformation sequences are essentially the same. They all involve rings made of fire each forming a part of her outfit.
[edit] Attacks
- Akuryou Taisan (悪霊退散 Akuryō Taisan?, "Evil spirits, be gone") — In the manga, this is an offensive attack that destroys enemies. In the anime, it is preceded by a chant (rin, pyou, tou, sha, kai, jin, retsu, zai, sen) and accompanied by the throwing of an ofuda scroll, making enemies unable to move. In the dub, the incantation is initially replaced by the phrases, "I summon the power of Mars! Mars Fireballs Charge!" Later, the literal translation "Evil spirit, begone!" is used instead.
- Fire Soul — Sailor Mars summons a fireball from her fingertips. This attack is only used in the anime. In the English version, it is usually called Mars Fire Ignite (or Mars Fire Blast in the English dub of the SuperS movie), though Mars Fireballs Flash, Mega Mars Fire, and Mega Mars Fire Flash were later used. In the live action version, the summoning is slightly different, with the words Youma Taisan used.
- Fire Soul Bird — Sailor Mars holds her scroll in front of her, then executes "Fire Soul", turning the scroll into a fiery bird. This attack is only used in the anime. In the English version, it is called Mars Firebird Strike.
- Burning Mandala — An attack used in the Black Moon saga. In the anime, Rei draws a circle of fire around her which turns into eight individual circles. She then focuses them into lines of energy to attack the enemy. In the English version, it is called Mars Celestial Fire Surround, Fireballs Blast, Celestial Fire Surround, Mega Mars Fire Rings Flash, and Mars Fire Surround at different points.
- Mars Snake Fire — An attack only used in the manga. It creates a snake made of fire that coils around her and attacks the enemy.
- Mars Flame Sniper — An attack that Sailor Mars gains in her Super form. She creates an arrow of fire which she shoots at her enemy. In the anime, she also creates a bow, and in English it is called Mars Flame Shooter (original name is used in the English dub of the SuperS movie).
- Galactica Flame Sniper — In the manga, Sailor Mars uses this attack against Sailor Moon when she was controlled by Sailor Galaxia.
[edit] Live-action drama
- Mars Power, Make Up — Rei's words to transform into Sailor Mars.
- Akuryou Taisan — Rei shoots multiple ofuda from her hands at her opponents (used on weaker opponents).
- Youma Taisan — Rei creates a ball of flame between her hands and shoots it at her opponents.
- Burning Mandala — Rei creates circles around herself and absorbs them to generate a powerful stream of fire.
[edit] Variations
Rei's history is essentially the same across the different series, but her personality varies widely. In the manga, she is aloof, calm, and exceedingly elegant. In the anime, she is much more immature, collecting comic books, competing for the attention of boys, and constantly bickering with Usagi. In the live-action drama, she has a very difficult time trusting people, and must work harder to give herself permission to have fun with her new friends.
Rei has a complex relationship with Minako in the live-action series. Though they often disagree and compete with each other, they also share great respect. Minako even sometimes lets her guard down around Rei, and eventually confides to her about what she feels is her destiny as a Senshi. Rei is told that she is to be the secondary leader of the Senshi, and alternately admires and resents Minako's teachings about what that means.
Whereas in the anime Rei daydreams of being a famous singer, in the live-action show she claims to hate karaoke. In one episode, when the other girls sing, she adopts an exaggerated air of impatience, while secretly tapping along to the beat under the table. Later in the series, she must briefly take on the role of a famous idol, calling herself "Mars Reiko."
