Wimbledon was a local government district in north east Surrey from 1894 to 1965 around the town of Wimbledon.
It was created an urban district in 1894 by the Local Government Act 1894 and gained the status of municipal borough in 1905.
A civic coat of arms was granted in 1906. The coat-of-arms incorporated heraldic elements associated with the history of the borough through the centuries. A black double headed eagle refers to the legend that Julius Caesar once made camp on the common, a sheaf of corn is borrowed from the arms of the Cecil family and the two Cornish Choughs above the crown are taken from the arms of Thomas Cromwell. The new borough took as its motto "Sine Labe Decus" meaning: "Honour without Stain".
The district was abolished in 1965 by the London Government Act 1963 and the former area was transferred to Greater London to be combined with that of other boroughs to form the present-day London Borough of Merton.
