Mamoru Chiba (地場 衛 Chiba Mamoru?) is the primary male protagonist of the Sailor Moon metaseries. He is known as Darien Chiba in the English version of the anime, and Darien Shields in the English manga.

His 'code name' in battles is Tuxedo Kamen (タキシード仮面 Takishīdo Kamen?), which translates to Tuxedo Mask. Among English-speaking fans, references to him are almost evenly divided between the two titles, with "Tuxedo Mask" slightly outweighing "Tuxedo Kamen."

He is best known as a mysterious, rose-throwing source of encouragement, as he appears in the anime. Wearing a mask to conceal his identity, he interferes with the Dark Kingdom's operations and offers the Sailor Senshi advice, sometimes physically aiding them in battle.

His first appearance is in the first episode or act of every series.

[edit] Tuxedo Mask

In Japan he's called "Tuxedo Kamen" which literally means "Tuxedo Mask". Tuxedo Mask is the person that rescues Sailor Moon from trouble throughout the story. He wears a black tuxedo, black cape (lined red), and often has a cane with him which he uses sometimes as a sword for defense (especially in the anime). He wears a mask and often comes to the rescue just in the nick of time. He is the major romantic interest for Usagi Tsukino in the Sailor Moon metaseries.

In the manga he starts out as an ordinary thief who is trying to get the Mystical Silver Crystal. Luna tells Usagi not to trust him. It is only later that this form takes a deeper role in the Dream arc when he's told he possesses the Golden Crystal--the Crystal of the Earth. He's also further developed by being given generals, the Shitennou, who act as his protectors, much like the Inner Senshi do for Usagi.

The anime has him standing on poles, defying gravity, and being more of a "swoop-in" type. He's given less of a role and his character pretty much stays constant for the entire anime series, not delving into the same issues that Tuxedo Mask of the manga version had to deal with. He gets no named attacks, however, he stays as a constant force that helps the sailor senshi throughout the series when they are in trouble.

[edit] Profile

Mamoru Chiba is the boyfriend of Usagi Tsukino. He is often portrayed as stoic, steady and introverted. This may be because when he was young his parents died in a car crash. This blocked his childhood memories of his current lifetime and opened up the memories of his previous life as Prince Endymion. When this happened he started to chase after Princess Serenity, an image he sees in his dreams. Early in the manga, he seeks the Mystical Silver Crystal, as he is convinced that this will restore his memories fully. He also is the character that gets brainwashed and captured the most throughout the series.

The kanji in Mamoru's name breaks down thus: the first, chi, means earth, ground and is the same kanji used in the word chikyū, referring to the planet Earth. The second kanji, ba, translates to location, place. Together, they form the word chiba which with these kanji means local. The third, mamoru, literally translates to protector, guardian. So his name would be translated as "Local Guardian," with a pun on Earth. The English dub parallels this by naming him Darien which means "protector".

Mamoru and Usagi are boyfriend and girlfriend during the series. They were not always on good terms - in both the manga and anime he and Usagi were antagonistic towards each other when they first met and only developed romantic feelings later on. For the manga those feelings developed before their identities were discovered; for the anime they showed shortly before their identities were discovered in the elevator. Once they became a couple, they became deeply devoted to each other and their love survives many trials. After dating for two years, Mamoru gives Usagi a promise ring at an airport. The couple eventually gets married. In the future, they become king and queen and have a child - Chibiusa.

The manga develops Mamoru more extensively, showing that the car crash happened on his birthday and gives a glimpse of his parents. It also shows him in the orphanage with amnesia. Mamoru also struggles with his identity throughout the manga, first as who he really is, then later if he's in the way of the Sailor Soldiers. A fair amount of subtle characterization is made for Mamoru, and later extending his role within the manga as to who he is. He also is given the power of psychometry, which also showed up in the anime, but was not given a name. This manifests in his ability to see and read dreams (Such as Chibiusa's), heal people and monitor the status of the Earth. This was not fully developed until the Black Moon arc, and was used occasionally throughout the series. Mamoru also has his left ear pierced in the manga, a fashion trait that does not carry over to his anime counterpart.

The anime tends not to develop Mamoru as much, however he is shown as more social than his manga counterpart. He's incredibly smart, and interested in a variety of subjects. He also dated Rei Hino for a short time before all the past life identities were revealed, but the relationship didn't develop very deeply.

Rei and Mamoru broke up after it was discovered that Usagi was Princess Serenity. The major divergence from the manga was in the dreams he was given during the latter half of the Sailor Moon R series. Mamoru listened to those dreams about Usagi dying in the future and was susceptable to them. This changes the perception of the character from his manga counterpart as more sacrificial, rather than stoic and emotionally strong.

In DIC's first promo for the North American adaptation, he was known as "The Masked Tuxedo". A preliminary dub name for Mamoru, that appeared on Kodansha's English website in an advertisement for the series, was said to be Mark.

[edit] Other forms

[edit] Endymion

Endymion (エンディミオン?) was the Crown Prince of planet Earth during the Silver Millennium. He and Princess Serenity from the Moon Kingdom fell in love with each other. A war broke out between the Earth and Moon; Prince Endymion defected and swore to protect Princess Serenity. Beryl killed both him and Princess Serenity in trying to take over the Moon. Prince Endymion reincarnated as Mamoru Chiba.

In the manga, Prince Endymion is not a very well-detailed character; even though the surrounding storyline is much more detailed than that of the anime. Mamoru usually does not transform into Prince Endymion as a power up. He was brainwashed by the Dark Kingdom for a time and was called "Endou," a friend of Motoki's, having brainwashed Motoki and taken over the real Endou's position.[1]

In the anime, Mamoru can transform into Prince Endymion, usually choosing to do so around the same time as Sailor Moon transforms into Princess Serenity. For a time, when brainwashed by the Dark Kingdom, he adopted this form for an extended period.

In DiC English dub, he is known as Prince Darien.

Later in the series he is shown as King Endymion, King of 30th century Crystal Tokyo, the consort of Neo-Queen Serenity and father of Small Lady. During this period he wears a lavender tuxedo.

In the manga the current Mamoru first appears as King Endymion in Volume 15, when he, along with the Sailor Senshi, show up in their royal outfits. He is coronated as the King of the Earth. This is the only time that Mamoru experiences an appearance change and a power up. Together with Neo-Queen Serenity they defeat Queen Nehellenia.

In the anime, King Endymion is only shown in the future as the father of Small Lady and the King of Crystal Tokyo. He is never shown to fight in battle, and again, as before is shown as back up.

[edit] Moonlight Knight

Tsukikage no Knight is the original Japanese title for this form of Mamoru, literally translating to "Knight of Moonlight." (Moonlight is composed of "Moon" and "shadow"). The Moonlight Knight appears only in the anime for the first half of Sailor Moon R, the Makaiju arc. When Usagi made a wish at the end of the first series that she wanted to be a normal girl, this erased everyone's memories. This included Mamoru, whose memories were wiped clean. However, Mamoru in a subconscious form still wanted to protect Usagi, so the Moonlight Knight was created. The Moonlight Knight could co-exist in the same space and time as Mamoru. Once Mamoru recovered his memories the Moonlight Knight had to disappear. Mamoru returned to being Tuxedo Mask after that point. As Moonlight Knight, he mainly dressed in Arabian robes and had a knife with him. He also threw white roses, instead of the usual red roses. Moonlight Knight may be a reference to Moonlight Mask, a Japanese superhero.

[edit] Powers

  • Tuxedo La Smoking Bomber — As Tuxedo Mask, he blasts the enemy with energy from his hand. This attack is only used in the manga.
  • Pink Sugar Tuxedo Attack — Used in combination with daughter Sailor Chibi Moon. This attack is only used in the manga.
  • Red Rose Throw — As Tuxedo Mask, he throws a rose to distract the enemy's attention. The roses are shown to have the power to break magical barriers, destroy forcefields, entrap monsters, and almost anything else required to free the Senshi from harm. The roses apparently also have razor-sharp tips which can be used offensively like throwing knives. He can also throw dozens of roses at once to block attacks. This power is only used in the anime.
  • White Rose Throw — As the Moonlight Knight, he throws a rose to distract the enemy's attention. These roses are essentially the same as those used by Tuxedo Mask. This attack is only used in the anime.
  • Black Rose Throw — As evil Prince Endymion, he throws a rose to distract the enemy's attention. Used while he was under the influence of the Dark Kingdom; a thrown rose could grow electrified vines to entrap an enemy. This attack is only used in the anime.
  • Teleportation — In anime Episode 36 (32 in the dub), Tuxedo Mask leaves Sailor Moon and disappears into a dark portal. Whether or not he was teleporting under his own power is unknown; at the time he was under the control of Queen Beryl and afterwards he was never seen to do so again. However, the Shitennou/Generals, who were once his friends in the manga all had the power to teleport and, while not seen, Tuxedo Mask having the power to teleport would explain how he is often able to reach Sailor Moon.
  • As Tuxedo Mask, Mamoru's primary weapon is his cane; doubling as a sword, it is used to strike at or parry an opponent. He has also extended it to rescue people from far away, or used it like a pool cue; he could presumably use it in a variety of other attacks. In some versions, he throws it similarly to how he throws roses in the anime. As Prince Endymion, his primary weapon is his sword, as is a short saber in his Moonlight Knight form.

[edit] Variations

Tuxedo Kamen
Tuxedo Kamen

Tuxedo Kamen's importance in the manga is significantly played up in several ways. In fact, many of Sailor Moon's transformations and final victories come as a result of her and Tuxedo Kamen fusing their powers together. In the final battle against the Dark Kingdom, Queen Metallia absorbed Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Kamen into her body. However, they were able to combine their powers through the Mystical Silver Crystal to destroy Queen Metallia from within. This was essentially the inspiration for the climax of the Sailor Moon R movie when Tuxedo Kamen transformed into Prince Endymion and helped Sailor Moon use the Silver Crystal to prevent an asteroid from crashing into the Earth. In the second story arc Black Moon, he combined his power with Sailor Moon through the Moon Scepter to kill Prince Diamond of the Black Moon Kingdom. In the Infinity story arc, he combined his powers with both Sailor Moon and Sailor Chibi Moon to create the Holy Grail, transforming Sailor Moon into Super Sailor Moon.

The Anime tends to make him appear in every episode, saving Sailor Moon's life. He did have a few attacks that resemble what would seem like some of the attacks in the manga, but these are not given actual names within the anime. This makes Mamoru and Tuxedo Mask seem significantly weaker than his manga counterpart.

The dub did not make too many significant changes to his character. He is a bit more extroverted than his original anime counterpart in the voicing. Darien was more likely to yell and get annoyed than Mamoru of the anime, who was often quiet and distant, even when he was annoyed. However, the difference isn't of great note.

[edit] Musicals (SeraMyu)

As in the anime and manga, Mamoru protects Usagi and is generally by her side. Several of his relationships change from musical to musical, however. For example, in one musical it's revealed that Queen Beryl was Mamoru's fiance from his time as Prince of the Earth. [citation needed]Associating with the Moon Kingdom was against Earth law, and Endymion violated this law when he associated with Princess Serenity. In this version of events, Serenity and Endymion are outlaws (similar to Romeo and Juliet) who drive an otherwise innocent woman, Beryl, to evil by making her jealous. Sailor Pluto also reveals in several musicals that she is in love with Endymion, though she has contented herself with watching from afar. [2]

Another variation occurs in the 12th musical, when Mamoru isn't killed by Galaxia and instead is able to fight alongside the Senshi. Mamoru is typically very involved in Senshi battles, fighting alongside the Senshi as opposed to his anime role of throwing a rose and then letting Sailor Moon deliver the finishing blow.

[edit] Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon

In the live action version, Mamoru is a much more silent, yet dedicated person. He is in search of the Silver Crystal due to his amnesia and dreams that told him that the magical object could restore his memories. To do this, he donned the Tuxedo Kamen disguise and became a thief, searching for the legendary crystal. Once his memories of his past and present lives were restored, he assumed his Endymion form to help the Senshi and tried his best to protect Usagi from the dangerous aspects of overusing the Silver Crystal. However, this went a bit too far when he joined the Dark Kingdom to understand more of the link between the Silver Crystal and Metallia (though he also went to protect not only Usagi, but the Shitennou, who Beryl threatened to kill if he did not join her). Learning that the Silver Crystal made Metallia stronger every time Sailor Moon used it, Endymion took Metallia into his body before succumbing to its dark power. Now an evil parody of himself, Dark Prince Endymion, he almost killed Sailor Mercury when Sailor Moon was forced to kill him to stop Metallia. He was revived once Sailor Moon managed to finally control the Crystal's power and destroyed Metallia for good.
