Makoto Kino (木野まこと Kino Makoto?) is a fictional character, a Sailor Senshi, one of the central characters in the metaseries known as Sailor Moon. She is known in the English translations as Lita Kino.

Her first appearance is in Episode 25 of the anime (21 in the dub), Act 5 of the manga, and Act 6 of the live action series.

[edit] Sailor Jupiter

Makoto can transform into Sailor Jupiter. Her dominant element is wood, but unusually most of her attacks are based in her secondary power: lightning. This is in reference to the Roman god Jupiter who had used lightning as his main weapon. She is by far the physically strongest of the "Inner Senshi”, able to easily lift a full-grown man above her head. Her uniform colors are green and light pink, and she wears short laced-up boots. In the manga and live-action series, she carries a transparent ball filled with potpourri on a chain belt at her waist. In the early manga, she always has a short antenna coming from her tiara; eventually this takes on the same role as in the anime, and appears only when she summons lightning. It does not appear in the live-action series.

[edit] Profile

Makoto's most striking feature is that, for a Japanese girl, she is very tall. This is downplayed in English translations (as a 5'6" girl is not all that uncommon in the West), but considerable notice is taken in Japanese. She is also physically very strong, and in fact was kicked out of her previous school for fighting. When she transfers to Azabu Jūban Junior High, where Usagi and Ami are students, she stands out all the more because her school uniform is different from everyone else's — unable to find anything in her size, the Juuban administration tells her to just wear her old one.

Makoto is simultaneously the most masculine and most feminine of the Inner Senshi. She is tall, strong, physical, and practices martial arts, but she is also rather busty and an excellent cook and house-cleaner. She dreams of one day being a baker, a florist and a bride. The explanation for this duality is very simple: despite her youth, Makoto lives completely alone. Her parents died years ago in a plane crash, and somehow she has retained her own apartment. As a result, she is self-sufficient almost to a fault, and becomes extremely nervous anytime an airplane passes overhead.

A special episode of the manga is dedicated to her, titled Makoto's Melancholy.[1] It is a slightly surreal story of coping with the high-school entrance exams. Makoto claims not to care whether she gets into high-school, and the other girls worry about her while she laughs it off by eating lots of delicious food. Eventually this leads to her being possessed by an evil 'sugar spirit', which must then be defeated.

Makoto has at least one former boyfriend; the importance of this subplot, as well as her level of obsession with cute men, varies wildly between adaptations. See Variations.

In an early DiC promotional tape that advertised Sailor Moon to television stations, Lita was called Sara. [2] Another preliminary name, appearing on Kodansha's English website in an advertisement for the series, was Maggie.

[edit] Other forms

Senshi forms - As she grows stronger, Sailor Jupiter gains additional powers, and at key points her uniform changes to reflect this. The first change takes place in Act 37 of the manga, when she obtains the Jupiter Crystal and her outfit becomes similar to that of Super Sailor Moon. She is not given a new title. A similar event takes place in Episode 154 of the anime, and she is given the name Super Sailor Jupiter. A third form appears only in the manga, also unnamed but analogous to Eternal Sailor Moon.

Princess Jupiter - During the Silver Millennium, Sailor Jupiter was also the Princess of her home planet. She was among those given the duty of protecting Princess Serenity of the Moon Kingdom. As Princess Jupiter, she dwelt in Io Castle and wore a green gown — she appears in this form in the original manga, as well as in supplementary art.[3][4] Naoko Takeuchi once drew her in the arms of Nephrite, but no further romantic link between them was established.[5]

[edit] Transformations

(Note: In the English dub, she transforms without saying "Make-up" at the end.)

  • Jupiter Power, Make-up! — Used to transform into Sailor Jupiter.
  • Jupiter Star Power, Make-up! — Used to transform into Sailor Jupiter.
  • Jupiter Planet Power, Make-up! — Used to transform into Sailor Jupiter. (Manga only.)
  • Jupiter Crystal Power, Make-up! — Used to transform into Sailor Jupiter's two more powerful forms in the manga, and into Super Sailor Jupiter in the anime.

All of Sailor Jupiter's transformation sequences are essentially the same. They all involve electric charges forming an atom path which encircles her body.

[edit] Attacks

Sailor Jupiter attacks with "Sparkling Wide Pressure"

  • Flower Hurricane — Sailor Jupiter summons a whirlwind of petals capable of blinding the target. Manga only.
  • Supreme Thunder — A bolt of lightning is brought down upon an antenna that comes out of Sailor Jupiter's tiara, which she then hurls at her opponent. In the English dub, it is variously called Jupiter Thunder Crash, Supreme Thunder Crash and Jupiter Thunderbolt Crash. In the manga, it had no name at all the first time it was used she simply said "My protector, Jupiter, call down a storm! Thunder and lightning, shower down!"
  • Supreme Thunder Dragon — A powered-up variation of 'Supreme Thunder', in which the captured lightning bolt takes on the form of a dragon-like projectile. This attack is only used once in the anime. In the English version, the name was changed to Jupiter Thunder Dragon.
  • Sparkling Wide Pressure — Sailor Jupiter hurls a ball of compressed lightning at the target, which explodes upon impact. In the English anime, it was called Jupiter Thunderclap Zap, Jupiter Thunder Power, Superior Sparkling Thunder, Supreme Thunder Crash, or occasionally the original name.
  • Jupiter Coconut Cyclone — An incongruously-named attack only used in the manga version. Lightning is projected all around her body.
  • Jupiter Oak Evolution — An attack that Sailor Jupiter gains in her Super form. She spins in place gathering power and summoning oak leaves, which she then hurls at the enemy.
  • Galactica Oak Evolution — Sailor Jupiter used this attack when she was under the control of Sailor Galaxia in the manga.

[edit] Live-action drama

  • Jupiter Power, Make Up — Makoto's words to transform into Sailor Jupiter.
  • Supreme Thunder — Makoto/Sailor Jupiter summons a lightning bolt towards her and then re-directs it to her enemies with her hands.
  • Flower Hurricane — Makoto/Sailor Jupiter projects piercing flower petals at her enemies (powered by a strong gust of wind).
  • Jupiter Thunderbolt — A PGSM-only attack using her Sailor Star Tambourine in which she releases a powerful stream of green lightning from her weapon.

[edit] Variations

Makoto's character is among the most consistent in the series. The exact balance of her tomboy/feminine sides varies, but both parts of her are always present. In the manga, she feels too tomboyish, and tries to prove herself by having many domestic talents. In the anime, she is still an excellent cook, and highly prone to random crushes, but portrayed mostly as a sort of tomboy. In the live-action series she enjoys shopping, but eschews "girly" things; she cooks, but also physically overpowers bullies; she reorganizes her home, but does it with a sledgehammer. She insists that she is not the least bit feminine at all, and seems surprised and touched when someone tells her she is.

Fans of the anime typically have a perception of Makoto as extremely boy-crazy. A recurring gag is her obsession with people who look like her old boyfriend (a sempai in Japanese, named Freddy in English. In the manga, "sempai" is mentioned only once or twice, and in the live-action drama is an integral part of why Makoto feels she needs to be alone. In each version, there are mentions of other men who were very briefly a part of her life. Makoto is generally attracted to Motoki Furuhata, especially in the anime, but only in the live-action show do they become close.

In the anime, Makoto is shown living alone, but it is never explicitly stated that her parents are dead. (In the dub, she even refuses to take in a cat, claiming her mother is allergic.)

A famous quirk among English-speaking fans is the translation of a particular anime scene. The girls are arguing over which of them should play the part of Snow White in a play. In Japanese, Makoto insists that she would be best for the role on account of having the largest breasts. In the DiC dub, she still points at her chest (with a boing! sound effect), but states instead that she has the most "talent." As a reference to this, anime fans occasionally use the term "talented" as a euphemism for "busty."

[edit] Music

[edit] Anime

Makoto has a number of songs and character singles from the anime. All were sung by her voice actress: [14]

  • "Anata no Sei ja Nai" (It's not your fault) from BSSM
  • "Star Light ni Kisu Shite" (Kissing in the starlight) from SMR
  • "Wasureru tame ni Koi wo Shinaide" (In order to forget, don't fall in love) from SMR
  • "We Believe You" from Sailor Stars

[edit] English Adaptations

These songs were sung by Jennifer Love Hewitt under an alias, not by her dub actress. [citation needed]

  • "Daddy's Girl"
  • "Rainy Day Man" (replacing "Anata no Sei ja Nai" in the episode it was featured in).

[edit] Live Action

Myū Azama released a couple of singles for Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon. [14]

  • "Miracle Dance Night"
  • "Lovely Yell"
