My name is Kristján Rúnarsson, and I live in Reykjavík, Iceland. I was born on November 28, 1987. I am currently studying Japanese at the University of Iceland and the clarinet and oboe at Reykjavik College of Music. Last spring I graduated from Reykjavik Junior College.
[edit] About my username
KRún is a short form of my name that I started to use to mark my paintings some years ago. I've never really painted much, but what I have painted was done mostly at my grandfather's. My grandfather, Vilhjálmur Einarsson, a former athlete and headmaster who now lives in East Iceland working as a part-time high school teacher and a painter, has a similar artist's name, VEin, upon which mine is based. KRún also sounds similar to the Icelandic word krúna, a variant of króna. Króna means "crown", and is by the way also the name of Iceland's national currency, giving the nickname an added splendor with the reference to wealth and power (muhahaha…).
My real name, Kristján, is the Icelandic version of the Latin name Christianus (which became "Christian" in English), from the Greek Χριστός (Khristós, the anointed), which was the title given to Jesus of Nazareth by his early supporters as a translation of the Hebrew "Messiah", Greek being at the time a widespread lingua franca.
[edit] Interests
[edit] Academic
My chief interests are music, languages and computers. I myself speak both Icelandic and English as native languages, having lived in both Iceland and the United States. Knowledge of other languages is as stated above, in addition to a tiny bit of Cantonese and Arabic, which I don't at this point think is sufficient for level 1 here. I am also very interested in different alphabets and, in addition to the Latin alphabet, I have learnt the International Phonetic Alphabet and the Cyrillic, Greek, and Arabic alphabets, with the Hebrew alphabet and the Japanese syllabaries Hiragana and Katakana in progress.
I have played the clarinet since I was 8 years old, the piano since I was 14, and the trombone since I was 16. Last autumn I added the oboe, which I am currently studying, along with the clarinet and music theory, at the Reykjavik College of Music (Tónlistarskólinn í Reykjavík). My clarinet teacher is Kjartan Óskarsson, my oboe teacher Kristján Þ. Stephensen, and my piano teacher was Marteinn Hunger Friðriksson.
[edit] Books & films
I simply love:
I also like the Chronicles of Narnia, the Da Vinci Code, Angels and Demons, the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and the Baroque Cycle.
Shogi (Japanese chess) is another hobby of mine, and every other week I attend shogi sessions at the Japanese embassy here in Reykjavík. I am also interested in other variants of the game, namely chu shogi ("middle-sized shogi") and dai shogi ("large shogi").
