I Heard It Through the Grapevine is a 1968 album released by Marvin Gaye on the Tamla (Motown) label. Originally released as In the Groove, the album followed a similar pattern that most of the albums released on the label during the 1960s went through.

When a song from an album is released with the album being a different name, it was usually re-released with the same title as the hit single. Grapevine was no different. Under its original name, the album initially had modest success with the singles "You" and "Chained", until "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" became an international #1 hit for Gaye in late 1968. Afterwards, the album was re-released under the name of the single. The success was granted as the album topped the Billboard Black Albums Chart at #2, while the album peaked at #63 on the Pop Albums Chart. A similar issue resulted when Diana Ross re-released her self-titled solo debut as Ain't No Mountain High Enough after the success of the song.
