David DeAngelo is the pseudonym of Eben Pagan, a seduction guru and the founder of the "Double Your Dating" company. "Double Your Dating" publishes literature and multimedia on dating and seduction, mostly over the Internet.

David DeAngelo is a dating adviser based in the United States. Originally a student of Ross Jeffries and using the nickname Sisonpyh, DeAngelo's ideas were first widely published and publicized in a post on the underground seduction newsletter called Cliff's List.^[1]

DeAngelo's commercial career began with the release of his first book "Double Your Dating" in 2001. Since then, he has released many products aimed at helping men with dating with titles such as the Advanced Dating series, 77 Laws of Success With Women and Dating, Deep Inner Game, and Meeting Women Online.

DeAngelo runs an e-mail newsletter which is distributed to over 1 million subscribers ^[2]. He is among the most sought after gurus in what is known as the "Seduction Community", ^{[citation needed]} and is believed to be the first guru to include guest teachers from other programs in his seminars, ^{[citation needed]} as well as the first to introduce a monthly interview series with those he considers to be skilled in seduction and related disciplines. ^{[citation needed]}

DeAngelo argues that much of social behavior is related in some way to sexual reproduction, and that human mating habits do not differ significantly from other species.

He suggests that societal conditioning has programmed many modern men to develop involuntary habits that increases the failure rate of consistently attracting women or negates the attractive qualities that were designed to make women want them.

DeAngelo states in one of his advanced dating technique seminars that people can use his techniques to achieve a variety of goals, whether that goal is to have casual sex or to form more lasting relationships. David DeAngelo, as a member of the Seduction Community as a whole, often comes under fire by women and men who advocate "just being yourself"^[3], but is just as strongly defended by his proponents who argue that these opinions are based on ignorance of his actual material. ^[4]

DeAngelo believes that it is not necessary to be physically attractive to women in order to attract them on a consistent basis. His motto, "Attraction isn't a choice," emphasizes that women feel attraction largely based on behaviors and attitudes.

According to DeAngelo, most men unknowingly allow women to dictate when and where relationships are formed.

One example is how men often appeal to women using "pick-up lines" or praises in the belief that this will be enough to attract a woman to him. DeAngelo extends this analogy further by referring to gifts offered by men to women as "bribes".

In this scenario, he hopes to show how a lot of men repeat the mistake of assuming most women are attracted to gifts and then feel heartbroken once a woman dumps them for someone else.

DeAngelo claims that by emphasizing a "cocky & funny" approach to courting women as well as developing other skills he sells that these men will be shown an alternative if not more successful way of being successful at dating. "Cocky & funny" refers to a stance a man takes in conversation with a woman that places humour and initial indifference to her sexuality at the forefront. Examples are faking repulsion in a humorous way; for instance when a woman makes a flirty, friendly gesture to smell your cologne by leaning towards your chest, if the man suddenly backs away chiding her for getting so close suddenly. If done in a confidently humorous way it is entertaining.

It must be made clear that DeAngelo neither opposes the effectiveness of gifts nor recommends these methods beyond dating.

It is often cited in his newsletter that he emphasizes on the dating portion and his advice may cause problems once both man and woman agree to take it to a relationship level. He also rarely if ever implies that gifts are ineffective in attracting women. Rather, he seems to have the belief based on his newsletters that if his methods are considered to be manipulative, then a man using gifts as a way to attract a lady would be a worse method of manipulation. This is because he believes gifts often replace personality or make up for personality deficits. Also he believes this sort of behavior is seen as courting behavior which he believes is counter productive to attraction. According to DeAngelo, when a woman sees you courting her she is more likely to slot you beneath her on the social ladder, delay intimacy, dictate the relationship, while allowing you spend and shower her with gifts.

The Inner Wuss: a character trait of men developed through time that causes them to become submissive around women in order to get their approval. DeAngelo claims that women prefer men who are of higher status than them. ^[5] (a related concept is 'Nice guy syndrome').
Cocky and funny: also known as 'cocky comedy', this refers to a humorous mock arrogance intended to communicate wit, intelligence and being 'a challenge'. DeAngelo points out that it is important to get the balance right, as just using 'cocky' "comes across as insecure, and comedy alone usually comes across as goofy and dumb." ^[6] ^[7]
Counterintuitive behavior: DeAngelo's description of some of his techniques to attract women, as they are the opposite of what most people think is attractive. Examples of such behavior include teasing a woman offhandedly and refusing to compliment her appearance.
Life changes: DeAngelo reiterates that the purpose of his programs is to effect a complete personality and lifestyle change among men that will help them achieve dating success. ^[8]
Emulate the Successful: DeAngelo encourages the following and emulation of those successful with women. He records interviews with those very successful in dating and releases them monthly as part of a subscription service.
Sexual Communication: DeAngelo's principle of a 'secret mating language' or 'secret mating dance' that takes place between a man and a woman before they can mate.
Reframing: Restructuring one's own beliefs set into a new one.Changing self doubt to positive thinking. An example is a bald man who thinks he can't talk to girls because he is bald and reframing his thinking to realize women find bald men sexy such as List of famous bald people.

Double Your Dating is a series of tutorials primarily advertised and sold through the internet.

The foundation for the Double Your Dating series is an ebook which claims to help men "demystify" much of what goes into attraction. Following the ebook, DeAngelo created further materials in the series, including a second ebook, as well as several ebooklets, seminars on DVDs and CDs covering various topics (notably the Advanced and Mastery series, as well as Meeting Women Online, Deep Inner Game, Power Sexuality, On Being a Man, Cocky & Funny and Body Language and several others), and the monthly Interviews with Dating Gurus CD subscription.

There is controversy in the Seduction Community regarding over-emphasis of "Cocky & Funny", DeAngelo's best known technique. ^[9]^[10] Critics believe the technique may backfire and can be easily interpreted as arrogant, insecure and phony and may actually harm a man's chances with women. Other organizations ^[11] have presented alternative methods, such as "Playful & Confident" ("P&C"), which they consider more effective.

It should also be noted that DeAngelo has acknowledged that his work is a collection of suggestions and ideas and not to be taken as dogma. As evidenced in his Sexual Communication series, DeAngelo encourages students to evaluate his material "with your own minds".

[edit] "Catch Him and Keep Him" Controversy

In 2005, there was a debate in the online seduction community about the identity of "Catch Him and Keep Him's" founder, Christian Carter. This controversy appeared initially on Thundercat's 'Seduction Lair' blog, seduction community blog, and regarded the identity of Christian Carter and whether the name was merely a pen name for David DeAngelo. The suspicion was raised by several factors; the similarity in site design and marketing style between the "Catch Him & Keep Him" and "Double Your Dating" sites, and the similarity in writing styles between DeAngelo and Carter. This was further fuelled by the fact that both the Catch Him and Keep Him and Double Your Dating websites newsletters give the same address for their offices.

A post by "Mine'99" (a nickname given to Ross Jeffries) was responded to by a person identifying himself as Christian Carter, who asserted that he was not David DeAngelo, but operates as a part of the "DYD crew". "Mine'99" replied to this post by pointing out that even if David DeAngelo is not Christian Carter but is working with Carter, it is still "a betrayal of the DYD customer list" as DeAngelo is "promoting and marketing a product that tells women to avoid the men who do the stuff he teaches in the DYD ebook." ^[12]

In various videos an individual identified as Christian Carter can be seen lecturing to a live female audience ^[13]. Christian Carter is also featured as a guest speaker in David DeAngelo's "Advanced Series" ^[14].
