Brentwood is a local government district and borough in Essex in the East of England.

[edit] History

It is named after Brentwood, Essex which is the main development in the area. Originally 'Burnt wood' as the area was largely used by Charcoal Burners. There are still large areas of woodland including Shenfield Common, Hartswood (named after its last private owner Mr. Hart, now open to public), Weald Country Park, and Thorndon Country Park. The distict was formed in 1974 from the former area of Brentwood Urban District, Epping and Ongar Rural District and part of Chelmsford Rural District. By royal charter, the district became a borough on 27 April 1993.

[edit] Boundaries

To the north west it borders the Epping Forest district and to the east it borders Basildon district. To the south west the borough has a boundary with Greater London and the London Borough of Havering with the M25 motorway forming part of the Greater London boundary. The London, Tilbury and Southend Railway forms the southern boundary with the borough and unitary authority of Thurrock.

[edit] Transport

The borough is suburban in character around Brentwood and Shenfield but once outside these main settlements it is entirely rural. There are railway stations at Brentwood railway station, Shenfield railway station and Ingatestone which connect to Liverpool Street station in the City of London and also at West Horndon railway station which connects to Fenchurch Street railway station, also in the City of London, and to Tilbury and Southend-on-Sea in the other direction.

Shenfield is at a major rail junction with routes to Southend-on-Sea, Southminster and the East of England. Fast main line services operate from Liverpool Street to Shenfield and, to a lesser extent, Ingatestone while Brentwood is served by a high frequency but slower stopping service.

A major artery running through the area is the A12 dual-carriageway, running from London by-passing Brentwood and on to Chelmsford and then Colchester and the ports of Harwich and Felixstowe. The old Roman road (A1023) goes right through the centre of Brentwood and joins the A12 (that veers away from the town) at the far ends of Brentwood. Within different parts of Brentwood the A1023 is called (from west to east) Brook Street, London Road, High Street, Shenfield Road, and Chelmsford Road.
