1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours is a collection of early recordings by American punk rock band Green Day. Although it is often referred to as the group's first album, this is not factually correct. Their first album was 39/Smooth; 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours included the songs from that record plus bonus material from other EPs the group had released.

Initially released in 19911, the set was re-issued in a remastered form in 2004. 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours has sold 585,000 units in the US as of November 2006 link

Although the album was originally released through the Lookout! Records label, in August 2005, Green Day pulled its pre-1994 music catalog from the label, reportedly due to unpaid royalties. It will be reissued by Reprise Records - Green Day's major label distributor since 1993 - in December 2006. Note that in Europe, the album was released by Epitaph Europe, and it is still in print there.

[edit] Notes

  • Note 1: The single bears a copyright notice dated 1990, which has led some sources to cite this as the release year.
  • Although the credits say "Knowledge" was written by Armstrong, the song was not written by Billie Joe, but by the unrelated Tim Armstrong of Operation Ivy, who originally performed the song.
  • 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours saw regional success in California, and paved the way for the band's sophomore effort, Kerplunk, which sold well nationally for an independent record and in turn laid the groundwork for 1994's major label smash hit Dookie.
  • In the list of personnel for the album it says John Kiffmeyer was responsible for drums and lyrics and Al Sobrante was responsible for photography. Actually, they are both the same person (John's nick name is Al Sobrante).
  • This album is currently out of print due to a royalties dispute with Lookout Records.
